Easy DIY Watermelon Candles for Summer 🍉

Easy DIY Watermelon Candles for Summer 🍉

Looking for an easy beginner candle project that feels fun, summery, and actually turns out cute? These watermelon-inspired candles are the perfect weekend DIY.

Made in a whiskey glass with layered colours and juicy watermelon fragrance, this project is simple enough for beginners but still gives that polished handmade look. They also make adorable gifts, party favours, or summer décor.

Using just 180 g of wax total, this is a great small-batch project for anyone wanting to try candle-making without investing in a huge amount of supplies.

What You'll Need

Want a ready-to-make version? Our Watermelon Candle Kit includes all ingredients pre-measured, pre-portioned, and labelled so you can spend less time prepping and more time creating.

Supplies

  • 1 x 250 ml heat safe glass container
  • 180 g Golden Brand 464 soy wax
  • 1  x RRD 50 wick 6"
  • 1 x Wick sticker
  • 15 g Watermelon fragrance oil
  • Magenta candle dye
  • Hunter candle dye
  • Pouring pitcher or heat-safe measuring cup
  • Thermometer
  • Digital kitchen scale

Step 1: Prepare Your Glass

Secure your wick to the centre of the glass using a wick sticker.

Optional: Use a wick holder to keep it centred while pouring.

Step 2: Melt Your Wax

  • Measure 30 g of soy wax into your heat proof container
  • Add a pinch of Hunter Green dye
  • Melt using a double boiler method until wax reaches 68°C
  • Remove from heat and add 3 g of Watermelon fragrance oil to the melted wax
  • Stir for 1 minute to ensure scent is fully incorporated
  • Cool wax to 58°C

Step 3: Create the Watermelon Rind

  • Pour all of the green wax into the bottom of the glass, being careful not to splash the sides of the glass.
  •  Allow it to cool ~30 minutes before adding the next layer

Step 4: Make the White Watermelon Layer

  • Measure 15 g of soy wax into your heat proof container.
  • Melt using a double boiler method until wax reaches 68°C
  • Remove from heat and add 2 g of Watermelon fragrance oil to the melted wax
  • Stir for 1 minute to ensure scent is fully incorporated
  • Cool wax to 58°C
  • Carefully pour the white layer over the green base
  • Allow to cool ~30 minutes before adding the next layer

Step 5: Make the Pink Watermelon Layer

  • Measure the remaining 135 g of soy wax into your heat proof container.
  • Add 4 pinches of Magenta candle dye to your wax
  • Melt using a double boiler method until wax reaches 68°C
  • Remove from heat and add remaining 10 g of Watermelon fragrance oil to the melted wax
  • Stir for 1 minute to ensure scent is fully incorporated
  • Cool wax to 58°C
  • Carefully pour the magenta wax over the white layer.

Step 6: Cool & Cure

Allow the candle to cool completely before trimming the wick to about 1/4 inch.

For the best scent throw, let the candle cure for 2–3 days before burning.

For extra summer vibes, try making another candle with a new creative scent! Watermelon blends beautifully with:

  • Strawberry
  • Lime
  • Coconut
  • Vanilla

Beginner Candle-Making Tips

Keep it simple

This project is meant to be fun, not perfect. Handmade candles always have character.

Use small batches to experiment

One candle is the perfect way to test colours and fragrance combinations before making larger batches.

Don't overdo the dye

A little colour goes a long way in soy wax.

Reuse your glass

Once finished, your glass can be cleaned and reused for another candle.
